Top 10 MBA Colleges in India (2027): Fees, Placements, Government vs Private and Non-IIM Options

Top 10 MBA colleges in India for 2027, comparing fees, placements, government and private colleges, and non-IIM options.

The top 10 MBA colleges in India for 2027 admissions, going by the latest official NIRF management ranking (2025), are seven IIMs plus IIT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and XLRI Jamshedpur. That is the short version. The useful version is knowing what each one actually costs, what graduates really earn, whether a government or private institute suits your budget, and what to do if your CAT score doesn’t reach the IIMs.

Quick Answer: Per NIRF 2025 (the latest official list), India’s top 10 MBA colleges are IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIT Delhi (DoMS), IIM Lucknow, IIM Mumbai, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, MDI Gurgaon and XLRI Jamshedpur. IIM A, B and C cost roughly ₹26–28 lakh and report average packages near ₹35 lakh. MDI and XLRI are the only private institutes in the top 10. For non-IIM routes, consider IIT Delhi, MDI, XLRI, FMS Delhi or good PGDM colleges.

If you are comparing PGDM and MBA programmes, or building a shortlist that goes beyond the IIMs, read on. We also cover Delhi NCR options, since that is where many aspirants with mid-range percentiles end up looking.

How this list was built

Rankings are a starting point, not a verdict, so here is exactly what sits behind the numbers.

  • Ranking basis: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), run by the Ministry of Education. NIRF 2025 is the latest official management list. As of mid-October 2026 we could not confirm an official NIRF 2026 management release on the NIRF portal, and several websites circulating “2026” lists contradict each other. We have not used any of them. We will update this page once the official list is verified.
  • Primary sources: NIRF itself, and institute-published placement reports and fee pages (for example, IIM Calcutta’s official 2024–26 report, and NDIM’s own fee page).
  • Secondary sources: Aggregators such as Careers360, MBAUniverse, Shiksha and Cracku. Where we use them, we say so.
  • Approximate values: Anything marked “approx.” is rounded from secondary sources and varies by batch and by what the institute counts. Always confirm with the college’s current brochure before you pay a seat fee.

A disclosure: This article is published by New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM). NDIM is not in the national top 10 and we do not claim it is. It appears in the Delhi NCR section, with its figures clearly marked as institute-reported.

Two things stand out. First, IIM Calcutta slipped to seventh in 2025, which surprises people who assume the rank order never changes. Second, only two non-IIM, non-IIT institutes made the cut, both private.

NIRF weights teaching and resources at 40%, research at 20%, graduation outcomes at 15%, outreach and inclusivity at 15%, and peer perception at 10%. That means a college can rank well on research output and faculty strength while its placement numbers tell a different story. Read the ranking and the placement data together.

Fees: what the top MBA colleges in India cost

Fees vary more than most listicles admit, partly because some institutes quote tuition only and others include hostel and mess.

Institute (group)Approx. total 2-year costNote
IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta₹26–28 lakhCracku and Careers360 differ slightly by year and by what is included
IIM Indore, IIM MumbaiWithin the ₹21–27.5 lakh band quoted for older IIMsCheck the current PGP brochure
IIM Kozhikode, IIM LucknowRoughly ₹16–21 lakh (mid-tier IIM band)Secondary estimate
FMS Delhi (government university)About ₹2 lakhSecondary estimate; among the lowest of any top-tier programme
MDI, XLRI and similar private institutesHigher end of the private rangeConfirm on the institute site; figures change each intake

We have deliberately not printed a precise rupee figure for institutes where we could not verify a current, official number. A guess that looks precise helps nobody.

What this means for you: The fee gap between a top IIM and FMS Delhi is more than ₹20 lakh. Over a typical education-loan tenure, that is a real difference in monthly EMI, even before comparing salaries. For a wider cost comparison, see Careers360’s MBA fee guide.

Placements: what the numbers actually say

Headline packages mislead. A single ₹1 crore-plus offer says nothing about what the median student earns, so look at average and median CTC.

InstituteAverage CTC (approx.)Median CTCBatch / source
IIM Calcutta₹36 lakh₹35 lakh2024–26; official report, via MBAUniverse
IIM Bangalore₹35.35 lakh₹34.75 lakh2024–26 (PGP and PGPBA), via MBAUniverse
IIM Ahmedabad₹35–37 lakh~₹37 lakh (Shiksha)2024–26; figures differ by method (see note)
MDI Gurgaon~₹23–25.5 lakhNot verifiedOlder IIRF 2025 data; treat as indicative
FMS Delhi~₹27 lakhNot verifiedOlder IIRF 2025 data; treat as indicative

A note on IIM Ahmedabad: Shiksha reports a PGP average of about ₹36.98 lakh. MBAUniverse, citing audited figures, reports ₹35.22 lakh, but as a “maximum earning potential” measure that is broader than CTC and not directly comparable. Both can be true. That is why we show a range.

Two more cautions:

  • Averages drifted down slightly in 2025 at IIM Bangalore (₹35.92 lakh to ₹34.88 lakh) and IIM Calcutta (₹35.07 lakh to ₹34.23 lakh), before IIM Calcutta’s 2026 batch recovered to ₹36 lakh. Placement is not a one-way upward line.
  • “100% placement” is defined differently everywhere. Some count only students who sat for placements; some include pre-placement offers. Ask each college how it counts.

We did not find a verified, official 2026 average for IIT Delhi, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Mumbai or XLRI that we were comfortable printing. Check their latest placement reports directly.

Government vs private: which is the better route?

Neither is automatically better. The right answer depends on your score, budget and target role.

FactorGovernment (IIMs, IITs, FMS)Private (MDI, XLRI, most PGDM colleges)
Total feesWide range; FMS and IITs are far cheaper than IIMsGenerally higher at the top end; varies widely below it
Entry routeMostly CAT, then the institute’s own GD/WAT/PICAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT, ATMA or similar, plus GD/PI
DegreeIIMs award an MBA; IITs and FMS award an MBAMost award a PGDM, which AICTE approves
Brand pullStrongest in consulting, finance and general managementStrong at the top few; varies sharply beyond them
Fee flexibilityLimited scholarships, some need-based aidOften merit scholarships and rebates

The honest trade-off is that government institutes give you the best fee-to-outcome ratio, but entry is extremely competitive. Private institutes cost more, but they open up more seats and more entrance-test options.

Top 10 MBA colleges in India except IIM

If you are searching for the top MBA colleges in India beyond the IIMs, the NIRF 2025 non-IIM list, as compiled by Careers360, runs like this.

NIRF 2025 rankInstituteGovernment or private
4IIT Delhi (DoMS)Government
9MDI GurgaonPrivate
10XLRI JamshedpurPrivate
11SIBM PunePrivate (Symbiosis)
12IIT Kharagpur (VGSoM)Government
13IIT Madras (DoMS)Government
14IIT Bombay (SJMSOM)Government
17IIFT DelhiGovernment
20SPJIMR MumbaiPrivate
22IIT RoorkeeGovernment

FMS Delhi does not appear in the NIRF extracts we reviewed, so we place it by other measures: it is a university department known for very low fees and strong corporate recruitment. It belongs on any serious non-IIM shortlist.

If you want to compare by outcome rather than rank, start with IIT Delhi and FMS for cost efficiency, XLRI and MDI for private-sector brand, and IIFT if international business is your goal.

PGDM vs MBA: does the name matter?

The short answer is that it matters less than people fear, provided you check three things.

  1. AICTE approval. A PGDM is awarded by autonomous institutes approved by the All India Council for Technical Education. Check the approval for the specific programme and year.
  2. AIU equivalence. The Association of Indian Universities grants equivalence between a PGDM and an MBA, which matters for further study and some government jobs. Ask for the letter.
  3. Accreditation. NBA, AACSB, AMBA or similar accreditation tells you about quality processes, not placements.

PGDM colleges can update their syllabus faster because they are not tied to a university curriculum. That is a real advantage in analytics, fintech and digital roles. The flip side is that quality varies enormously, so verify before you trust a brochure.

For a deeper look at how a PGDM is structured, see NDIM’s PGDM programme page and its AICTE approval details.

PGDM and MBA colleges in Delhi NCR: where mid-range percentiles land

Many aspirants search for MBA colleges in Delhi NCR for a 70 percentile CAT score, or for PGDM colleges accepting CAT scores in Delhi NCR beyond the top tier. There is no honest single cut-off to quote, because every college sets its own shortlist criteria each year and weighs GD/PI, academics and work experience differently. What you can do is compare institutes by NIRF band, fees and what each publishes.

If MDI Gurgaon is out of reach

People searching for MDI Gurgaon alternatives usually want a similar Delhi NCR address and a strong corporate network at a lower cost or a lower percentile. A fair shortlist would include IMI Delhi, FORE and IIFT on brand, with NDIM and JIMS as lower-cost options. Compare each on fees, recruiters and your preferred specialisation rather than on rank alone. The same logic applies if you are comparing IMT Ghaziabad, BIMTECH or LBSIM against smaller Delhi institutes: list the fee, the recruiters, and the specialisations you want, then decide.

Where NDIM fits

NDIM is an AICTE-approved, NBA-accredited institute in Tughlakabad, New Delhi, whose PGDM has been granted MBA equivalence by the AIU (institute-reported). Here is what its own pages say, and we label it as such:

  • Fees (2027–29 batch): ₹7 lakh per year, so ₹14 lakh over two years, excluding hostel and optional international study tours. Hostel twin-sharing accommodation starts at about ₹11,000 per month. Source: NDIM fee page.
  • Scholarships: A pool of ₹2.5 crore for merit and rebate categories, including defence-service wards and students from J&K and the North-East.
  • Entrance tests accepted: CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT and ATMA, followed by GD and personal interview.
  • Placements: NDIM states 100% placement, a claim verified by the Advertising Standards Council of India, and says 250+ companies visit each year. Treat this as an institute-reported claim and review the placements page and recruiter list for batch-level detail.
  • Industry exposure: Live projects, internships and corporate mentoring. See internships and specialisations.

In plain terms, NDIM’s NIRF 2025 rank is 86, well below the top 10. It is a realistic option if your budget is moderate and you want Delhi-based corporate exposure, not if you are chasing the IIM or MDI brand.

How to choose: a practical checklist

Start with money, not rank.

  1. Set your loan ceiling. Work backwards from what EMI you can carry on an entry-level salary.
  2. Match specialisation to college. Finance candidates and marketing candidates rarely need the same school. IIFT suits international business; FMS and IIT Delhi suit cost-conscious generalists.
  3. Ask for the placement report. Request average, median, percentage of batch placed, and the number of students who opted out.
  4. Talk to current students. One conversation with a second-year tells you more than ten brochures.
  5. Check approvals. AICTE approval, AIU equivalence, and accreditation for the specific batch year.
  6. Apply to a range. Combine two ambitious, three realistic and one safe option.

Timing matters too. CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November, and registrations reportedly fell about 3.7% to roughly 2.84 lakh, according to Careers360 News (October 2026). A smaller pool does not make cut-offs easier by itself, so keep preparing and keep backup tests such as XAT, CMAT or MAT in play. NDIM’s CAT and MAT resource pages are a decent starting point, and the eligibility and procedure page explains the selection steps.
