CMAT 2027: Exam Date, Syllabus, Pattern and Preparation Plan

Student preparing for the CMAT exam with books, a study planner, and a laptop showing a career progress concept.

If you are planning to apply to a management programme next year, CMAT 2027 is probably already on your list. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has placed the exam in its 2027 calendar, the registration window is expected to open this month, and you have roughly four months to get ready. This guide covers the confirmed date, the pattern, the syllabus, and a week-by-week preparation plan, and it flags clearly what is official and what is still expected.

Quick Answer

CMAT 2027 is scheduled for February 7, 2027, according to the NTA examination calendar released in September 2026. The date stays tentative until the official information bulletin arrives. The test is computer-based, runs three hours, and has 100 questions across five sections worth 400 marks, with +4 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong one. Registration is expected to open in October 2026. Start preparing now, using a 16-week plan.

CMAT 2027 exam date and key dates

NTA released its tentative 2027 examination calendar in a public notice dated September 16, 2026, and it lists CMAT for February 7, 2027 (reported by FreeJobAlert, Free Press Journal and CareerPower, all 2026). NTA itself says calendar dates are tentative and may change, and that detailed information bulletins will follow separately. February 7, 2027 falls on a Sunday. As of October 7, 2026, I could not find the CMAT 2027 information bulletin or registration link, so no registration dates are official yet.

For context, last year’s cycle ran like this: CMAT 2026 was held on January 25, 2026. Registration opened on October 17, 2025 with an initial deadline of November 17, and was later extended; Careers360 reports it closed on November 24 (Scroll, 2025; Careers360, 2025-26). If NTA follows the same rhythm, you should expect a registration window of about a month, with a short correction window after it (November 20 to 22 in the 2026 cycle).

Practical advice: do not wait for the last week of registration. Create your NTA account as soon as the portal goes live, since servers get slow near deadlines.

Who can take CMAT 2027? Eligibility and fee

NTA has not issued the 2027 bulletin, so use the 2026 rules as a guide:

  • Qualification: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students could apply in 2026 if their result was declared before admissions for the academic year began. Check the 2027 bulletin for the exact wording (Daily Jagran, 2026).
  • Nationality: education portals reported Indian citizenship as a 2026 requirement. This is unconfirmed for 2027, so verify it in the bulletin.
  • Age limit: none in 2026.
  • Fee (2026 bulletin, as reported): ₹2,500 for general-category male candidates, and ₹1,250 for general-category female, Gen-EWS/SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL (male and female) and third-gender candidates (Scroll, 2025). A Daily Jagran report (2026) expects similar figures for 2027. Treat the 2027 fee as an estimate until the bulletin confirms it.

CMAT scores are accepted by AICTE-approved institutions for MBA and PGDM admissions. If you are unsure how a PGDM differs from an MBA, the AICTE website is the right place to check how approved programmes are classified. NDIM’s own PGDM programme page explains its two-year structure, dual specialisations and the AIU equivalence to MBA.

CMAT 2027 exam pattern

The pattern below is from CMAT 2026, the latest cycle with a published format. NTA has said the 2027 pattern will come with the notification, so check for changes.

What this pattern means for your strategy

Two features shape how you should prepare.

1. Negative marking is mild but real. A wrong answer costs one mark and a right answer earns four. That means a guess only pays off when you can eliminate at least one or two options. Blind guessing across a whole section is a poor idea.

2. Equal weight for every section. Each section is worth 20% of the paper. A student who is strong in Quant but ignores General Awareness and Innovation and Entrepreneurship is leaving up to 160 marks on the table. Because there is no sectional cut-off in the time limit, you can also choose which section to attack first, a useful lever on exam day.

A quick illustration of scoring (a worked example, not an official figure): if you attempt 80 questions, get 64 right and 16 wrong, your score is (64 × 4) − 16 = 240. If you attempt 70 and get 60 right and 10 wrong, you score 230. Accuracy matters nearly as much as volume.

CMAT 2027 syllabus: section-wise topics

NTA does not publish a rigid, topic-by-topic syllabus for CMAT. The lists below are indicative, based on how coaching platforms and past papers have described the sections. Use them as a map, not a guarantee.

Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation

Most questions test school-level maths applied in business-style situations. Typical areas:

  • Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, averages, time-speed-distance, time and work, simple and compound interest, mixtures
  • Number systems and basic algebra: linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, progressions
  • Geometry and mensuration: triangles, circles, areas and volumes
  • Modern maths: permutations and combinations, probability, set theory
  • Data interpretation: tables, bar and line graphs, pie charts, caselets

Logical Reasoning

  • Verbal reasoning: syllogisms, statements and conclusions, assumptions, arguments
  • Analytical reasoning: seating arrangements, puzzles, blood relations, directions, ranking and ordering
  • Series, coding-decoding and data sufficiency
  • Critical reasoning passages in short form

Many coaching and education portals describe this as one of the more scoring sections for well-prepared candidates, though that is an editorial view and not an NTA statement.

Language Comprehension

  • Reading comprehension (short and medium passages)
  • Grammar: error spotting, sentence correction, subject-verb agreement, tenses
  • Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases
  • Para-jumbles, fill in the blanks, cloze passages

General Awareness

  • Current affairs: national and international events from roughly the past 8 to 12 months before the exam
  • Business and economy: banking terms, budgets, major reports, trade developments, mergers and acquisitions
  • Static GK: geography, history, polity, awards, books and authors, sports, important days
  • Basic business and management awareness, including well-known companies, brands and leaders

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This section was introduced to reward business thinking and is the one many candidates neglect. It generally covers:

  • Business models, start-up terms, funding stages and basic lean-start-up ideas
  • Government schemes and initiatives supporting start-ups and MSMEs
  • Innovation concepts: design thinking, intellectual property, product life cycle
  • Case-style questions that ask you to pick the best business decision

The best preparation here is not a textbook. It is reading business news with a start-up lens, and our section on the study plan explains how to do that in 15 minutes a day.

CMAT 2027 preparation plan: a 16-week roadmap

With the exam on February 7, 2027 and today being October 7, you have about 17 weeks. The plan below uses 16 weeks and leaves a few days of buffer. It assumes 2 to 3 hours on weekdays and 4 to 5 hours on weekends. Adjust it if you are working or finishing college.

WeeksFocusWhat to do
1-2DiagnoseTake one full-length mock without preparation. Note your score by section, time spent per section, and your accuracy. Collect the 2026 sample or memory-based papers.
3-6Build fundamentalsQuant: arithmetic and algebra basics. Logical Reasoning: puzzles and arrangements. Language: 1 passage a day plus grammar rules. Start a current-affairs notebook.
7-10Deepen and practiceMove to topic-wise sets with a timer. Add Data Interpretation and modern maths. Begin Innovation and Entrepreneurship reading. Take one sectional test per week.
11-13Mock phase 1Two full mocks a week. Spend as long analysing each mock as you spent taking it. Fix weak topics with short targeted drills.
14-15Mock phase 2Three mocks a week at the real exam time slot. Practise your section order. Revise formulas and the current-affairs notebook.
16Taper and reviseOne or two light mocks, then revision only. Check admit card, centre location and ID documents. Sleep well.

A simple weekday routine (about 2.5 hours)

  1. 45 minutes: Quant or Data Interpretation practice
  2. 40 minutes: Logical Reasoning set
  3. 30 minutes: Reading comprehension and grammar
  4. 20 minutes: Current affairs and business news
  5. 15 minutes: Innovation and Entrepreneurship reading, or error-log review

How to handle each section

Quant and Data Interpretation. Build speed on arithmetic first, because it is the most forgiving area. Learn to skip a question within about 60 to 75 seconds if you are stuck. Data Interpretation caselets reward calm reading, not calculation speed.

Logical Reasoning. Practise puzzles on paper, not on screen only. On the real test you will be using rough sheets, and the habit of drawing a quick grid pays off.

Language Comprehension. Read one editorial or long article daily. Do not memorise word lists in isolation. Learn words from passages you actually read.

General Awareness. Keep one notebook and one source. A common mistake is following five news apps and retaining nothing. Pick a monthly current-affairs digest, revise it weekly, and keep a separate page for business and economy.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Spend 15 minutes a day on business news. For each article, ask three questions: what problem is the company solving, how does it make money, and what could go wrong. This is exactly the thinking the section rewards.

Using mock tests properly

Mocks are where scores actually improve, but only if you analyse them.

  • Keep an error log with three columns: the topic, why you got it wrong (concept gap, silly mistake, time pressure), and the fix.
  • Track accuracy by section, not just the total. A section at 60% accuracy usually needs concept work. A section at 90% accuracy but low attempts needs speed work.
  • Test your time plan. At 180 minutes for 100 questions you have about 1.8 minutes per question in total. If you reserve 15 to 20 minutes for review, that becomes roughly 1.6 minutes each. General Awareness and Language questions tend to be quicker, which lets you borrow time for Quant and Reasoning.

A sensible starting order for many candidates is General Awareness, Language, Logical Reasoning, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, then Quant and Data Interpretation. Test this in your mocks and keep whatever order gives you the best accuracy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating CMAT as an easy exam. Competition for seats at good institutes is real, and percentile-based cut-offs differ by college.
  • Skipping the two “soft” sections. General Awareness and Innovation and Entrepreneurship are 40% of the paper.
  • Taking mocks without analysis. Ten analysed mocks beat thirty unreviewed ones.
  • Over-attempting. Guessing everything under a 4/-1 scheme can erase your gains.
  • Ignoring the application window. Missed deadlines, wrong category certificates, and photo or signature upload errors are avoidable.
  • Ignoring other exams. Many institutes also accept CAT, MAT and other scores, so check which tests your target colleges accept. If you want a backup, NDIM’s resource pages on CAT and MAT are a helpful starting point.

After the exam: scores, percentile, GD/PI and admissions

NTA converts raw scores into percentiles, and many institutes use a combination of the CMAT score, a group discussion or personal interview, academic record and work experience. Cut-offs vary widely between colleges and years. Be wary of any “guaranteed cut-off” you see online. Secondary sources sometimes list marks-versus-percentile tables, but these are approximate until NTA publishes its own result data.

Start preparing for the interview stage in January, not after results. Practise explaining your academic choices, a current-affairs topic, and why you want a PGDM or MBA.

If you are shortlisting colleges in Delhi NCR, review each institute’s eligibility, selection process and fee details directly. At NDIM, you can read the Eligibility and Procedure page and then start your application on the Admissions portal. To see how the institute describes its programmes, specialisations and industry exposure, visit the NDIM Delhi homepage. NDIM’s admissions page (2026-28 batch) lists CMAT among the scores considered for shortlisting, along with CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA, GMAT and state common entrance tests. It asks for a graduation in any stream with at least 50% marks for the general category (45% for reserved categories), followed by a group discussion and personal interview. Requirements can change between intakes, so check the page again for the 2027-29 batch.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CMAT 2027 exam?

NTA’s examination calendar lists CMAT 2027 for February 7, 2027. The date is tentative until NTA publishes the information bulletin.

When will CMAT 2027 registration start?

NTA has not announced exact dates. Education portals expect the notification and registration to begin in October 2026, based on previous cycles. Check cmat.nta.nic.in for the official announcement.

What is the CMAT 2027 exam pattern?

The 2026 pattern was 100 questions, 400 marks, three hours, five sections of 20 questions each, with +4 and -1 marking. NTA will confirm whether 2027 differs.

Is there negative marking in CMAT?

Yes. In the 2026 format, one mark was deducted for each wrong answer, while unattempted questions carried no penalty.

Is CMAT 2027 conducted online or offline?

CMAT is a computer-based test held at exam centres in multiple cities.

Can final-year students apply?

Under the 2026 rules, final-year bachelor’s students whose results would be declared before the admission process could apply. Check the 2027 bulletin for the exact wording and cut-off date.

How many months of preparation are enough?

Four months of consistent study is workable for most graduates, especially if your maths and English are at a comfortable baseline. Those starting from scratch in Quant may want to add a few extra weeks.

Does CMAT have a sectional time limit?

No sectional timer was mentioned for the 2026 pattern, so candidates could move freely between sections within the three hours.

Which section should I attempt first?

There is no single right answer. Choose the order that gives you the best accuracy in full-length mocks, then stick to it on exam day.

Is a PGDM from a CMAT-accepting institute equal to an MBA?

That depends on the institute. AICTE-approved PGDM programmes are widely recognised, and some institutes hold AIU equivalence to MBA. NDIM states that its PGDM has been granted AIU equivalence, which you can verify on the PGDM page.
